Cheerful, bright and fun! Perfect for saying thanks or even hello.

Wow, didn't realize my last post was back in June. Guess I needed a break from blogging or what I call blogging. It's no easy task. I actually found myself with some time on my hands to play on the computer, browsing sites and Etsy pages. I am so pleased with my new work, so thought it's time to share.

Back to my "sunny disposition"... that's right, I am in a really good mood these days. Well, actually it's almost been two years now that I've been in this good mood. November will be my two year anniversary for Monkey Mind Design. I have loved every moment and cherish my new found creative freedom!

My New Love This Summer... Basil!

Actually, I've loved it for some time now. However, this summer I decided to grow my own. I don't have a green thumb or know anything about gardens, plants or growing herbs... but this is the summer to try new things. Sure, I am taking baby steps but by the end of the summer should be a pro! Well, we'll see. For now, just enjoying seeing my seeds turn in to little green sprouts. I can't wait to use my own home grown herbs in some of my summer recipes.

Here's one of my picnic crowd pleasers and favorites... Caprese Salad!

1 pound fresh mozzarella
3/4 to 1 teaspoon fine sea salt or fleur de sel
Freshly ground black pepper
1/3 cup packed basil leaves, torn or cut into thin strips
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil (optional: 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar)
Directions
Slice the tomatoes and cheese into 1/4-inch thick slices. Arrange the salad on a serving platter or individual plates in an alternating pattern, with two to three slices of tomato for every piece of cheese. Season with the salt and pepper to taste. Scatter the basil leaves over the top and drizzle with the oil. Serve at room temperature.

Everyday you are faced with choices. My advice, don't hold yourself back! Make those "it's going to be hard" choices, make those "not so fun" choices, and make those "I'll feel better if I do" choices. Choose to turn things around. Starting with today!

This is the year for great things to come. Not only do I believe it... I will do what ever it takes to achieve it! I will be fit (waking up early for a run or gym workout). No more excuses! My business will grow and my creativity right along with it (giving each day 150% and then some). I will spend fun time with my family and friends (making time for swimming, picnics, bike rides, camping, etc.). I will find motivation and inspiration to keep me charged and focused (filtering out the bad and hunting down the good). I know it sounds cliché... but you get one shot at this life, so make the most of it!

I am so excited for sunny summer days. I plan to be outdoors as much as possible. I'm looking forward to bike rides, hikes, swimming and picnics in the park! This summer, don't forget to pack the perfect minty sweet fruit salad. I found this on Foodnetwork.com, tried it and loved it! It was such a big hit! I've tried many fruit salads in my time and this is one to remember. I think it's a combination of the honey, mint and lime zest that makes it stand out from the rest. So, I thought I'd share! Try it. It's easy and oh so tasty!

Salad:

1/3 cantaloupe, cut into 3/4-inch chunks (about 2 cups)
1 (16 ounce) container strawberries, quartered (about 3 cups)
5 medium kiwis, peeled and cut into 3/4-inch chunks (about 2 1/2 cups)

Dressing:

3 tablespoons honey
3 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1 teaspoon lime zest
3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh mint leaves

Directions:

Place all of the fruit into a large bowl. In a small bowl, whisk the honey, lime juice, zest, and mint. Right before serving, pour the dressing over the fruit and toss gently to combine.

It's been such a busy first quarter. And then, throw in two colds at two weeks a piece. Now, I am just getting to some new creative for the shop. A lot is brewing with summer right around the corner. Right now, I am excited for Mother's Day! I have a better appreciation now that I'm one. It's hard work! But oh so rewarding. I think back and wonder how did my mom do it day after day and with three kids. WOW! So here's a little tribute to all those mom's that do whatever it takes, thanks!

Lovin' the Fresh Powder!

Well if you were curious what I do when I'm taking a break... we head to the mountains! There's nothing like a long weekend in Breckenridge, Colorado to melt the stress away. And bonus... tons of new snow! Here's how it goes... we roll out of bed, get on all our sporty gear and head up the mountain. Then mid afternoon, a little aprés ski is in order. Ready to relax and have some much deserved pints. Best happy hour around, Breckenridge Brewery & Pub right on Main street with $2 pints and half price appetizers. A couple of hours later, back to the resort and you guessed it... hot tub time! Then repeat for a few more days... absolute heaven!

Modern Military... New trend or has it always been around?

I'm lovin' the green!
So many wonderful shades to choose from. Inspired by army green and fashion, I put together this treasury "modern military". It never fails, I can browse through Etsy and find so many amazing and creative pieces that work with a specific theme. I remember working at the "Limited" in the mall around 96' and army green was in. I bought these awesome cargo pants... later turned them into shorts. Guess it's time to get back on board with this fashion trend.

Fortunately, love I have.... time is what I need. These holidays seem to creep up and before I know it... Bam, I'm running around like a crazy lady. I am still brainstorming some ideas for my sweet love. I'm thinking a fancy homemade dinner. We're not a chocolate's kind of family but I think I can find a sweet and decadent dessert that will be one to remember. This might be the one Chocolate Pots De Creme with Cherry Whip.

You never know where inspiration will come from. But I can tell you one place full of inspiration is Etsy. That's where I go to get those creative juices flowing... even if it's just for planning a nice night in. Hope you find some sweet inspiration here. Etsy Treasury - Love is all you need!

This morning I woke up tired and sluggish. I know... we all have those days but, I pushed through and started my day out at the gym. Happy with myself but still feeling sluggish. So with a cup of coffee in hand I watched a recorded episode of "Biggest Loser". So inspirational and made me reflect on what I've done and how I've changed my life and my career. So today, I just wanted to take the opportunity to send a friendly reminder to all feeling a little sluggish in life, love or career...

Funny thing... who knew I liked drawing birds so much!
These illustrations are all heart and soul. I really enjoyed taking my time to create each month so uniquely. Creative freedom is such a blessing! I don't mind long days and a stiff back... because I get to be an artist. That's what it's all about. Art is my passion and my life. How can you resist... a warm popover?

A popover is a light, hollow roll made from an egg batter similar to that used in making Yorkshire pudding. The name "popover" comes from the fact that the batter swells or "pops" over the top of the muffin tin while baking. They can also be baked in individual custard cups.

So now that you know what a popover is... you must try one. They are not hard to make and oh so good! My mother-in-law made them for us awhile back and I never forgot them. Now I have my own pan... watch out we are batter crazy!! Enjoy!

Regular Popovers
1 6-cup Popover Pan
1 1/4 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 large eggs
1 1/4 cup milk
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into 6 even pieces
1 tablespoon unsalted butter melted

Oil or spray pan. Preheat oven to 400〫and set rack in middle of oven. Prehead popover pan in oven about 2 minutes. Blend flour, salt, eggs, milk and melted butter until mixture is the consistency of heavy cream, about 1 to 2 minutes. This can be mixed in a food processor, blender, electric mixer, or with a hand mixer. The batter can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator. Batter should be used at room temperature.

Place one small piece of butter in each cup and place back in preheated oven until butter is bubbly, about 1 minute. Fill each cup half full with batter and bake 20 minutes. Reduce temperature to 300〫and continue baking 20 minutes.

Makes 6 popovers. Serve with butter, jams or other sweet or savory spreads.

Home of the "U-Pick-Em" Pumpkin Patch! Over 100 acres filled with corn mazes, pumpkin patches, petting zoos and hay rides. This year we left with a whopping five pumpkins... we've got a lot of carving ahead of us. If you've never been to a pumpkin patch, it's worth a visit!! Even if you don't plan on buying any pumpkins. It's not everyday you get to enjoy walking a round such a beautiful setting. We were so fortunate to have a perfect Colorado fall day with blue skies and a cool breeze. Have a little extra time? Try the corn mazes... too much fun! Now for a little hot cider and the classic "It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" to complete the day!

Sometimes we need reminders to stay on track. It's true for me. It's been one year since I left the agency world. Everyone thought I was crazy to leave a secure job in a growing agency but, the light was off for me. I flat-lined at work. It was time for a change. Wabi-Sabi (Japanese concept) - A way of living that focuses on finding beauty within the imperfections of life and accepting peacefully the natural cycle of growth and decay.

I love this concept! This past summer I went on the hunt for some display items for my table for an art festival. I took a trip to local thrifts stores and found some amazing pieces. All with the character, style, color and charm I was looking for. You can really get lost in all the items and the stories they tell, like a chipped ceramic cookie jar or a splintered wooden goose or even a tattered story book. I will definitely be back just to browse... so many treasures to be discovered! Challenge yourself to get out and look around you... what do you see? Find your "wabi-sabi"!

It's Friday and we have gray skies here in Colorado. I think there was a dusting of snow in the mountains. I love this time of year... makes me want to get a cozy scarf and grab a hot cup of coffee. I Am... Sir Freelancelot!

I'm back in the saddle again this week. On-site at another great agency. I have to say, I am really enjoying being a freelance designer with my extra time. I like the interaction and it helps me keep up-to-date on all the latest and greatest in the agency world. The best part of freelancing... it's only a few days or hours at a time. I've even dipped into Etsy "Alchemy" and found some great new clients needing design work. I will have to post some of the identity work I have done recently. So fun! I've really enjoyed working with photographers! Well, better call it a night... I have a full day tomorrow on-site!

It's funny, I used to struggle with what to give all my friends and family for birthdays, weddings, baby showers and holidays. Seriously, how many candles, picture frames and bath and body works can you give. Well now, I always have the perfect gift! I put together a small sampling of greeting cards and then... the personalized note cards. It has been a big hit! It's fun at parties too, because they always get passed around. I love that no one else has a gift like mine. It's special and unique... especially when I make a new design with that person in mind. And bonus, I can use the designs in my shop. This is a design I just did for a girlfriend of mine. Hope she enjoys using them!

I ♥ the 80s!
Well I guess cause I'm an 80s kid. I've been looking for some inspiration for a new line of products for a local "POP-UP" designer's shop. I started with a simple color palette... CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black). Then some how that let me into a kind of 80s look and feel... so I am going with it. It's still a work in progress... so stay tuned for new 80's thowback papergoods!

Back to the 80s... I found some of these great pieces on Etsy that all related to me. Yes, it's true... I owned a fanny pack. Can't forget my Vans.. and funny my daughter has a pair now. Had to be stylin' in my Ray Bans and chillin' with my mix tapes. And one of the only videos games I ever got into... Mrs. Pac-Man... loved it! I even had the pac-man game watch from the Sears catalog! My dream car, the DeLorean from Back to the future. But seriously, the John Hughes movies were the best! Like Sixteen Candles, Pretty In Pink and Breakfast Club. I could reminisce forever! I'd love to hear about your 80s must-haves or favs!

I try to make it part of my daily routine to get in the Etsy forums and see what new ideas, advice or tips are being passed around. I stumbled across "Best Marketing Tip" and decided to check it out. Etsy is not only a place to sell but such a supportive community for entrepreneurs. I am always impressed with the positive energy and the willingness to share valuable information just for the sake of helping another. Time to get my new calendar designs going. This year has gone by so fast. I started selling last year in late November... I was way behind for calendars and holiday cards. My goal this year... be on time. Don't miss any opportunities. I'll admit it's very hard to stay ahead of the holidays. It's a little odd working on Halloween in August and now calendars in September. But I am excited to say... I just sold my first 2011 Calendar. Now just need to find more hours in the day to get all my new ideas completed.

My brother... the photographer.
I've always struggled taking pictures. I over think the composition, lighting, angle, subject matter, etc.. Like singing... I just can't do it. So I decided to feature some undiscovered talent who has no problem taking photos and does it quite well. These photographs were taken by my brother, Manny. He has always been great behind a camera. For now he does it for fun but I'd love to see him take it further. He lives in Santa Fe. If you've been there you know there are so many great shots around every corner. I just did! Can't wait to get my earrings in the mail.
I have been working around the clock... not only on my Etsy shop but with tons of custom freelance design and to throw in the mix, new school clothes shopping and summer vacation with my little one. The house has suffered a little... oh well. Can't do everything and never planned too. I guess what I am trying to say is, don't forget to treat yourself right every now and then. Now that I work for myself... I need to remember the praises, accolades, and bonuses need to come from... me. As my own boss, I wish I let myself slack a little or take that three hour martini lunch or call in sick and then go to the movies.

Well after being sick in bed for a week... I am finally back on track! And actually I've been busy with several custom logo orders. And loving it! So got me thinking... maybe I want to expand Monkey Mind Design and create a sister shop... and offer graphic design services. I have been freelancing since I started Monkey Mind and might be ready to take it to Etsy. I am so excited. I have had a great response from my new clients like "Oh My Gosh! Anita, these are AWESOME! I'm going to sit down and figure out which one I want - they are all great. Thanks SO much!" and "Hi Anita...I looooooooove #1, I just love this whole logo, and thank you, thank you, thank you."

Crow and Chair Designs is a small Denver-based art and design company. Recently, I acquired a sewing machine and started a line of plushies based on children's drawings. After speaking to a very good friend of mine who is an art teacher at a local school, I decided to do a specific line targeted at giving back to art programs in schools around Denver and surrounding areas.

The Creature! Plushie line is based on the art students' drawings which remain one-of-a-kind. Currently, there is one line started and I would like to continue it beyond this single school as it has been fun having the kids see their artwork come to life and at the same time, help further the art program and create awareness.

All proceeds go to each school I work with and no matter the percentage of commission involved with vendors, galleries, etc. I only seek to recoup material costs so I can continue making them.

With the grant, I would be able to maintain a website, allowing a central place for educators to get information, communicate about getting involved and also maintain a gallery and online store; continue to locate and maintain spaces for the Creature! line to be available to the public to be sold; promote the Creature! line more effectively; and purchase a chair for my sewing table so I don't have to sit on my couch while I sew (yuck.)

Grand Canyon - If you haven't been, it's a must!
It will truly take your breathe away. I took a week off to unplug and recharge. Hiking down the canyon sure gives you a new perspective... I admit though, a scary new perspective. But I am so glad I conquered my fear of heights and completed two day hikes down. This will definitely be a vacation to remember!

I just took a quick trip down to Santa Fe, New Mexico, my hometown. Summer in Santa Fe is the best. The weather is fantastic and the town is so beautiful. I feel so inspired! I took in every flower, quirky corner, plaza bench and of course patio margaritas. If you've never been, it's a must see destination. Not only is the food amazing but the art overflows. I walked around the plaza for six hours... in and out of small boutiques and galleries. I was only there for two days and feel completely recharged. Feed your soul, visit Santa Fe.

This card is a tribute to my husband who is the best Father ever. He is an avid mountain biker and loves his bike. Well naturally, my daughter loves it too. And now she has left behind the trike and has a bike like Dads. That's when the idea hit me, why not a great Father's day card featuring bikes. Well... it's been a big hit!! It was the feature photo for the "Father's Day Showcase" on Etsy. I have had amazing views and sales from this one card. First Art Fair - City Park Pavillion - Denver

I did it! Got my first one under my belt. As you can see from this picture I am an early bird. I learned a lot from this one. Mostly about getting inventory ready and set up. I really enjoyed preparing for this and now ready for more. I had the best time going to thrift stores to look for display items. Surprisingly, I found exactly what I was looking for. So lucky!

I also met some great fellow Etsians selling. Great to meet the artist in person. I love the way we all have a different approach to table display. Saw some great ideas. Can't wait for the next one!

Mother's Day Brunch Idea

I love Gruyère cheese and recently went to the French restaurant Brasserie Ten Ten in Boulder. I had the best ham and cheese crepes. So savory! Now I am on a mission to make them at home. Crossing my fingers I can conquer the crepes. And if I can do it... then Mother's Day brunch will be an extra special delight!

Early Inspiration - Amazing Work!

In October of 2009, I left the Agency world and started Monkey Mind Design. I can honestly say I am following my dream. In November, I started selling on Etsy (marketplace for handmade goods). Everyday I find a new and inspiring piece of art there. It is amazing the amount of talent in this world. I will be showcasing some of my inspiration through this blog. I'm an 80's kid and can remember the numerous afternoons spent on my bike. I had one just like this with the banana seat and long handle bars. These note cards were fun to make and brought back some great memories!
