Be Inspired! Quote After Quote!

Albert Einstein 1879-1955
I love the internet for many reasons. For one, the immediate access to unlimited quotes, pretty much for anything you search for. It's amazing how much a couple of short sentences can say. I wanted to share some quotes that caught my eye. Take a moment, focus and read them slowly. They are powerful and inspiring, I just had to share.

My Top 10 List
1. Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.
2. Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.
3. A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.
4. Once we accept our limits, we go beyond them.
5. Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.
6. Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.
7. The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.
8. Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.
9. Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.
10. Everything that can be counted does not necessarily count; everything that counts cannot necessarily be counted.

Etsy Treasury Time!

Aqua Envy - curated by Studio Seventy Five
Yesterday, I received a message from Studio Seventy Five letting me know she picked one of my prints to be featured in her Etsy treasury. So excited, had to share. And it's so lovely, I love aqua! I really can't just pick one favorite but my top two favorites are Seeds and Stones Arrowhead Pendant and the Atlas Glass Jar Soap Dispenser. Hey hubby if you're reading, hint hint! What do you think? Which one's your favorite? Seriously... that dog is too cute!

2011 Calendar - Artsy Birdies

2011 Handmade Calendar - Artsy Birdies - Original Illustration
Funny thing...  who knew I liked drawing birds so much!
These illustrations are all heart and soul. I really enjoyed taking my time to create each month so uniquely. Creative freedom is such a blessing! I don't mind long days and a stiff back... because I get to be an artist. That's what it's all about. Art is my passion and my life. Maybe I like drawing them so much because they are a symbol of freedom. I'm so excited to share this calendar. The look and style really feels like me, so Anita. Well, I hope you enjoy them!

How can you resist... a warm popover?

A popover is a light, hollow roll made from an egg batter similar to that used in making Yorkshire pudding. The name "popover" comes from the fact that the batter swells or "pops" over the top of the muffin tin while baking. They can also be baked in individual custard cups.

So now that you know what a popover is... you must try one. They are not hard to make and oh so good! My mother-in-law made them for us awhile back and I never forgot them. Now I have my own pan... watch out we are batter crazy!! Enjoy!

Regular Popovers
1 6-cup Popover Pan
1 1/4 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 large eggs
1 1/4 cup milk
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into 6 even pieces
1 tablespoon unsalted butter melted

Oil or spray pan. Preheat oven to 400〫and set rack in middle of oven. Prehead popover pan in oven about 2 minutes. Blend flour, salt, eggs, milk and melted butter until mixture is the consistency of heavy cream, about 1 to 2 minutes. This can be mixed in a food processor, blender, electric mixer, or with a hand mixer. The batter can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator. Batter should be used at room temperature.

Place one small piece of butter in each cup and place back in preheated oven until butter is bubbly, about 1 minute. Fill each cup half full with batter and bake 20 minutes. Reduce temperature to 300〫and continue baking 20 minutes.

Makes 6 popovers. Serve with butter, jams or other sweet or savory spreads.

Think Positive... everyday!

2011 Calendar - Think Positive - 12 Months of Motivational Sayings

Sometimes we need reminders to stay on track. It's true for me. It's been one year since I left the agency world. Everyone thought I was crazy to leave a secure job in a growing agency but, the light was off for me. I flat-lined at work. It was time for a change. I was ready to go back to my roots, making art by hand and having creative freedom. I took the plunge and started my own business, it's sayings like these that help me push forward when I start to doubt myself. Now, one year later, I am happy and proud that I took a chance on myself!

I leave you with 12 positive sayings!
1. Believe it can be done.
2. Put your heart into it.
3. Welcome change.
4. Dream big.
5. Believe in yourself.
6. Always do your best.
7. Smile. It's contagious.
8. Do something unexpected.
9. Live one day at a time.
10. Think positive.
11. Laugh often.
12. Be yourself.

Wabi-Sabi - The beauty of imperfection!

Burnt Sienna Wabi Sabi Buttons by Glazed Over

Wabi-Sabi (Japanese concept) - A way of living that focuses on finding beauty within the imperfections of life and accepting peacefully the natural cycle of growth and decay.

I love this concept! This past summer I went on the hunt for some display items for my table for an art festival. I took a trip to local thrifts stores and found some amazing pieces. All with the character, style, color and charm I was looking for. You can really get lost in all the items and the stories they tell, like a chipped ceramic cookie jar or a splintered wooden goose or even a tattered story book. I will definitely be back just to browse... so many treasures to be discovered! Challenge yourself to get out and look around you... what do you see? Find your "wabi-sabi"!

Take a moment for yourself, I am! So I thought I'd share some comfy, cozy, relaxing, fall finds. Pssst... I think there is a nap in my near future!

Sure... why not Fluffy too!

Doggie Halloween Costumes provided by Etsy
Halloween Costumes For Your Pets
Now that Halloween is just around the corner... there are all kinds of cool creations popping up on Etsy. And who can resist looking at a cute dog in a costume. Here are some of my favorite picks! If one of these cuties came barking at my door, I'd surely have a treat for them. My dogs aren't as cooperative when it comes to costumes. Years back, I tried with some reindeer antlers... let's just say I got the evil eye and I'm sure something got chewed up as a payback. So today, I share these sweeties that deserve the spotlight for taking one for the team and taking a cute photo! All these photos make me smile and chuckle a little! Enjoy!

I Am... Sir Freelancelot!

Image provided by chopshopstore - Sir Freelancelot XL T-shirt for men
I'm back in the saddle again this week. On-site at another great agency. I have to say, I am really enjoying being a freelance designer with my extra time. I like the interaction and it helps me keep up-to-date on all the latest and greatest in the agency world. The best part of freelancing... it's only a few days or hours at a time. I've even dipped into Etsy "Alchemy" and found some great new clients needing design work. I will have to post some of the identity work I have done recently. So fun! I've really enjoyed working with photographers! Well, better call it a night... I have a full day tomorrow on-site!

The Perfect Gift...

Elegant Personalized Note Cards - 6 Pack

Personalized Note Cards!
It's funny, I used to struggle with what to give all my friends and family for birthdays, weddings, baby showers and holidays. Seriously, how many candles, picture frames and bath and body works can you give. Well now, I always have the perfect gift! I put together a small sampling of greeting cards and then... the personalized note cards. It has been a big hit! It's fun at parties too, because they always get passed around. I love that no one else has a gift like mine. It's special and unique... especially when I make a new design with that person in mind. And bonus, I can use the designs in my shop. This is a design I just did for a girlfriend of mine. Hope she enjoys using them!

80s Forever!

I ♥ the 80s!
Well I guess cause I'm an 80s kid. I've been looking for some inspiration for a new line of products for a local "POP-UP" designer's shop. I started with a simple color palette... CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black). Then some how that let me into a kind of 80s look and feel... so I am going with it. It's still a work in progress... so stay tuned for new 80's thowback papergoods!

Back to the 80s... I found some of these great pieces on Etsy that all related to me. Yes, it's true... I owned a fanny pack. Can't forget my Vans.. and funny my daughter has a pair now. Had to be stylin' in my Ray Bans and chillin' with my mix tapes. And one of the only videos games I ever got into... Mrs. Pac-Man... loved it! I even had the pac-man game watch from the Sears catalog! My dream car, the DeLorean from Back to the future. But seriously, the John Hughes movies were the best! Like Sixteen Candles, Pretty In Pink and Breakfast Club. I could reminisce forever! I'd love to hear about your 80s must-haves or favs!

The Power of A Positive Community!

Love What You Do Notebook by Honeydesignbooks
A Great Resource For Entrepreneurs... Etsy Forums
I try to make it part of my daily routine to get in the Etsy forums and see what new ideas, advice or tips are being passed around. I stumbled across "Best Marketing Tip" and decided to check it out. Etsy is not only a place to sell but such a supportive community for entrepreneurs. I am always impressed with the  positive energy and the willingness to share valuable information just for the sake of helping another. I thought I'd share a few of the tips... which I think are more important than some marketing tips you might find in a business text book or publication.

Blackburgbelle's tip:
Be authentic. Be yourself. Let your personality shine through in your products, blog posts, press releases, tweets, product descriptions, and all other marketing efforts.

YourUniqueKreation's tip:
Let your passion drive your business...it will shine through as genuine. People like that.
And practically, include a few business cards in every order...word of mouth is still the best!

TheHickoryTree's tip:
My best marketing tip. Keep your eyes and ears open to new ideas and trends. One of my buyers had a suggestion about something she wanted me to make. It turned out to be one of my best sellers.

September Already?

NEW!! Flower Power 2011 Calendar
BONUS!! Use the expired months for gift tags... love to re-purpose!

Time to get my new calendar designs going. This year has gone by so fast. I started selling last year in late November... I was way behind for calendars and holiday cards. My goal this year... be on time. Don't miss any opportunities. I'll admit it's very hard to stay ahead of the holidays. It's  a little odd working on Halloween in August and now calendars in September. But I am excited to say... I just sold my first 2011 Calendar. Now just need to find more hours in the day to get all my new ideas completed.

Undiscovered Talent

My brother... the photographer.
I've always struggled taking pictures. I over think the composition, lighting, angle, subject matter, etc.. Like singing... I just can't do it. So I decided to feature some undiscovered talent who has no problem taking photos and does it quite well. These photographs were taken by my brother, Manny. He has always been great behind a camera. For now he does it for fun but I'd love to see him take it further. He lives in Santa Fe. If you've been there you know there are so many great shots around every corner. Here are a couple of examples of some great black and white shots... and from his phone. Wish my phone pictures turned out like that. Hope you enjoy the work, can't wait to see what he shoots next!

Beautiful blue translucent Asian floral earrings, handmade jewelry by theshagbag on Etsy

I just did! Can't wait to get my earrings in the mail.
I have been working around the clock... not only on my Etsy shop but with tons of custom freelance design and to throw in the mix, new school clothes shopping and summer vacation with my little one. The house has suffered a little... oh well. Can't do everything and never planned too. I guess what I am trying to say is, don't forget to treat yourself right every now and then. Now that I work for myself... I need to remember the praises, accolades, and bonuses need to come from... me. As my own boss, I wish I let myself slack a little or take that three hour martini lunch or call in sick and then go to the movies.

So short story long, take care of yourself. Your joy and positive energy will spread to the people around you and so on. I can't wait to get my special package from theshagbag! Take a peak at this amazing Etsy shop... so many lovelies. It's hard just to pick one item.

New Ideas are Brewing.... stay tuned!

Well after being sick in bed for a week... I am finally back on track! And actually I've been busy with several custom logo orders. And loving it! So got me thinking... maybe I want to expand Monkey Mind Design and create a sister shop... and offer graphic design services. I have been freelancing since I started Monkey Mind and might be ready to take it to Etsy. I am so excited. I have had a great response from my new clients like "Oh My Gosh!  Anita, these are AWESOME!  I'm going to sit down and figure out which one I want - they are all great.  Thanks SO much!" and "Hi Anita...I looooooooove #1, I just love this whole logo, and thank you, thank you, thank you."

So that being said... stay tuned! New business ideas are starting to brew!

Wednesday wish - Chips and Salsa!

Chips and Salsa Anyone? Don't forget the Margaritas!
Today's post is all about my love for salsa... the hotter the better. It's safe to say I am totally addicted to great salsa. I could skip the meal and just order more salsa! The best salsa (and hottest) comes from my favorite restaurant in Santa Fe, Tomasita's. If you get a chance, stop by and enjoy. Be prepared though, it's hot! And it comes with some fabulous blue corn tortilla chips. Ok, I better figure out how and where to get my salsa fix today!

Laughter Is The Best Medicine

Humor is infectious. The sound of roaring laughter is far more contagious than any cough, sniffle, or sneeze. When laughter is shared, it binds people together and increases happiness. Humor and laughter strengthen your immune system, boost your energy, diminish pain, and protect you from the damaging effects of stress. Best of all, this priceless medicine is fun, free, and easy to use.

Friday Favorites - Feelin' Foxy!

This this week I was inspired to try my hand at a fox illustration. It's a bit of a tribute to my sister's dog, Popper.
